Rose PowerBuilder Link Enables Round-Trip Engineering Between Rational Rose and PowerBuilder

Cupertino, CA (February 16, 1999)--Rational Software Corporation and METEX Systems Inc. today released Rose PowerBuilder Link, an add-in product that provides tight integration between Rational RoseR and Sybase's PowerBuilderR, the market leading enterprise application development tool. With this release, METEX assumes responsibility for the ownership, development, marketing and support of the Rational Rose integration for the PowerBuilder market.

With Rational Rose, developers create models representing the numerous views of an application system. The Rose PowerBuilder Link add-in automatically translates these models into PowerBuilder's PowerScript code. Code can be both reverse-engineered and generated. Through reverse-engineering, Rational Rose allows developers to analyze existing PowerScript code and then to visualize and modify projects, application objects and their relationships. These forward and reverse-engineering mechanisms may be used to continuously maintain consistency between an application's model and implementation, facilitating iterative development and round-trip engineering.

"Rose PowerBuilder Link provides unique capabilities for developing an object model for PowerBuilder applications," said Bill Bartow, vice president of marketing and enterprise tools engineering, Internet Applications Division of Sybase, Inc. "The combination of Rational Rose and PowerBuilder will provide developers with an even more productive environment for the creation of distributed component-based applications for the enterprise."

Rose PowerBuilder Link interfaces with the Rose Extensibility Interface to present a visual depiction of PowerBuilder objects. The ability to visualize an application architecture provides developers the flexibility and necessary traceability when considering the maintenance of an application, implementing additional functionality, fulfilling changing user requirements, or designing for reuse. It also provides a straightforward, automated technique to document the system--a necessary, but often overlooked critical task in application development.

"Rose PowerBuilder Link provides PowerBuilder developers with unsurpassed integration to the industry's leading visual modeling tool, Rational Rose," said Gary Bauer, president of METEX. "The round-trip engineering capabilities in the product provide an important bridge for PowerBuilder organizations, which have investments in their existing development environment. Integrating components from other tools is critical for managing the complexity of development that is going on today."

"METEX Systems has impressed us with the depth of their knowledge of the technical needs of the PowerBuilder developer community," said Pamela Roussos, Rational's vice president of marketing for visual programming tools. "We are confident in their ability to evolve the integration between Rational Rose and PowerBuilder and to support our customers who rely on PowerBuilder."

Rational Rose

Rational Rose provides visual modeling based on the Unified Modeling Language (UML) for designing component-based applications. The UML, pioneered by Rational and officially adopted as a standard by the Object Management Group (OMG), is the industry-standard language for specifying, visualizing, constructing, and documenting the artifacts of a software system. Rational Rose features multi-language capabilities and enterprise team development features, including integration with Rational's ClearCaseR software configuration management tool.
